Earthquake Song was written as a part of the Vancouver Opera's 2017 New Works Project: a collaborative workshop between 2 composers, 2 librettists, and 3 young artists. Mentored by Benton Roark, the composers had one day to write a work with each librettist (for a total of two days of writing) and were then able to workshop the pieces with performers before presenting the works in a concert at the end of the workshop. Heather Ramsay wrote the libretto for The Promise and the premiere was performed by Baritone Geoffrey Schellenberg, Soprano Tamar Simon, and Pianist Mary Castello.
