Fortica derives its name from a 13th century Venetian fortress (nicknamed Fortica Španjola) atop the hills of the island of Hvar. Built on the ruins of a 1st century B.C.E. Illyrian settlement, this fortification represents a rich cultural and military history and remains as a symbol of strength and constancy. With the ubiquitous nature of the initial motive, this piece attempts to emulate Fortica's tenacious nature despite the constantly changing cultural and political climate that surrounds it.
